What I've Saved So Far This Year and July Expenses

So many changes and thoughts and we know what calms me down is spreadsheets. We know there are few changes to be made to my ledgers or accounts at this point. I'm on that set it and forget it game.

While the feeling of impending doom still lingers, I will press on like the bloggers before me who have made their intentions known.

When I started this journey, I realized monthly check-ins with my budgets led to emotional fluctuations which are to be avoided at all cost. So I settled on quarterly check-ins.  With the new budget apps I've tried, it's a little enticing to see the growth monthly. And with the wild returns other people are reporting on their blogs, I can't help but feel a bit curious. Additionally with COVID isolation, I've run out of things to do.

So that's what bring us here. Let's get into it.

How much have I saved so far?

Well in this instance, the easiest thing to track is how much I've invested. I actually don't know how other people track regular savings because for the most part my savings accounts hold my emergency fund or serve as a holding place for my auto-investments.

Anyway, let's get into it.

As of Jul 31, 2021 (all rounded), I have invested:

401k:  $13k

After tax 401k: $14k

Roth IRA: $3.5k

Regular brokerage:  $31.5k

GRAND Total Saved/Invested YTD: $62k

Savings Goal at Beginning of Year:  ~$50k

Reach Savings Goal (w/COVID isolation factored in): $65k

Note:  For future me, the numbers don't quite make sense because a lot of what was invested earlier in the year was leftover cash I was hoarding from 2020 because I'd just bought a house and because of COVID job insecurity. But either way, I've been curious how much I've dumped into investments in the market this year.

According to My FIRE Tracker, I ended 2020 with an investment balance around: $238k

And as of June 2021,  I was around $340k.

That's up about $100k as of June having invested only $60k (a little less as of Jun 2021). So that's pretty good! For literally the blood, sweat, and TEARS that go into earning this money, it's a little reassuring to know it isn't all for nothing.

For perspective because this helped me when I started my FIRE journey, here's what my earnings look like thus far.

Earnings

Gross W-2 earnings YTD: $86k

Net W-2 earnings YTD (gross - 401k and other payroll deductions like taxes):  $30.5k

As you can see, at this point with set it and forget it (and taxes), I don't bring a lot home (about a 1/3 of earnings). At the beginning of the year or late 2020, I made the choice to just go for the after tax 401k to further automate my investment vs seeing that money as net pay and then taking the extra step to invest it.  I'm sure the expense ratio is higher with my 401k fund vs picking a Vanguard fund or something, but this made sense for what I'm trying to do. The less steps for me, the better.  Plus with after tax 401k I can rollover to Roth 401k for tax free growth. So, yeah, that.

July expenses.. because why not

Your Spending

CATEGORYSPENDING
Total$1,458.69

Gifts & Donations$625.56
Auto & Transport$272.30
Food & Dining$257.91
Bills & Utilities$196.03
Personal Care$70.00
Fees & Charges$36.89

Let's run through these for funsies.

Gifts and Donations - I sent money to family overseas and bought My Old Boss a mug.

Auto and Transport - Renewed my car insurance and bought gas.

Food and Dining - Groceries and Takeout. A little high because I spent about $75 at Trader Joe's for my 6 month stock up on silly snacks.  The nearest Trader Joe's is about a 2-hr drive and I was in town for a dentist appointment so... I mostly just got plantain chips since it was so hot and the other stuff I wanted wasn't in stock. Not sure if I'll be making that trip again in 6 months because my craving for those things is significantly less.

Bills and Utilities - Same old expensive monthly utilities and internet bill.

Personal Care - I got my hair done to get ready for video chats with New Job.

Fees - I'm pretty sure that's my robo advisor that I still have done nothing about. I stopped dumping money into those accounts so for now I mostly just keep it to see how it compares with my other accounts.

My July expenses would have been over $2k if I were paying student loan and mortgage that month but with COVID, I've had a bit of a reprieve.

And there you have it! A little peak behind my financial curtain and a little task to keep my mind from circling the drain.

Unrelated, it's been extremely weird to experience my FIRST weekend with no work to check or have in mind over the weekend (or weeknights). I'm doing better than I thought because I've been working toward this transition.

I even ventured to plot when to use 2 of my 3 weeks of vacation that I will accrue by the end of the year. Old Me would have thought twice about making some sort of impression by not using vacation time so soon after starting New Job. But since it's the same company, I'm going to not let myself feel anything other than this is time I earned and have the right to use. And even with nowhere to go, going through the motions will be a good step to break out of my overachieving-burnout tendencies. I want to do things differently.

Admittedly, this weekend I've already had some flashbacks to Old Job. My Brain is rounding it up to trauma given how it all ended. The way it ended just confirmed some of my most negative thoughts. But let's move away from that for now.

I'm self-medicating with sweets and silly TV shows.

Losing My Mind A lotta bit

I don't know what happened but between 11a and 12n I about lost my mind. I was CONSUMED with My Buddy. For whatever reason, a flood of all my old feelings just came rushing back. I couldn't see clearly.

This is what I don't get. What is happening in my brain, body, or neurons that makes this happen. Wednesday was such a much better day where I felt like this was behind me and then suddenly at 11a it was ALL I could think about.

I wanted to know how much she made.

Does she make more than me?

Did I actually make more than her? Did My Boss value her more than me?

Is there any recognition that I outperformed?

Does my boss feel any remorse for letting me go or not trying to keep me? Is she hateful? Does she regret it? Does she replay any of the events of last year over and over in her mind? Does she replay any of our conversations about my role and ask what she could have done differently?

I wanted to reach out to the intern to get My Buddy's salary.

I wanted to ask someone, anyone?

I wanted to reach out any of my old team and ask... why don't you miss me? why did you hate me?

I get the feeling all the things I tried to streamline are just going to fall to the wayside or return to their previous state. I get the feeling that once I leave they were just biding their time or biting their tongue and a bunch of redundancies and useless meetings will return. Was that whole year of my life for nothing?

I was spinning out of control. I did a little bit of work. But I played some loud music. I tried to pray quickly. And I reviewed some of my public recognitions. I mentally compared to the other 3 people on my immediate team. I received A LOT of recognition. Maybe I shouldn't villify my boss so much. Did she do that on purpose? No because there was really only 1 that I received that she didn't give to anyone else. So null.

Anyway, that was extremely scary. And I was actually thinking that I was not as anxious these last couple of days but now I don't know. Spoke too soon.

Proud of myself:

- Didn't believe the lies that I had so many texts on Ipad checking on me, i.e. didn't turn on Ipad to check

- didn't IM anyone on Old Immediate Team or larger team

- didn't message or call my family or randos to verbally rehash my disappointment and anxious feelings

- didn't relook at boss's calendar

- didn't look at issue board

(I think I did relook at the public OneNote though)

But I think I'm going to step away from computer.

I want to get some take out and I may take trash to dump.

7a, New Job, Day 5, So Much Backsliding

 I made it to Friday!

Yay, thank you, Lord!

Between last night and this morning, so much backsliding!

Struggle Bus

- Last weekend I deleted some old links and bookmarks from old job from easy access. Then I remembered I was still daydreaming of being asked back (magical thinking), so then I just put them in a folder. Today, I deleted the rest when it hit me sometime this week for the first time, that I don't actually want to go back. The moment didn't last long, but in that instant I wanted to stay and thrive here.

Call Center has been all I've known for the last 6 years. I was good at it. I saw myself taking over Call Center #3. In one daydream, I said to my manager, find a role for My Buddy so you can promote me to AD and you can focus on other more strategic business decisions. That was the dream. She would never promote me past My Buddy and I was getting tired of working around My Buddy.

But like they say, the best way to get over something is to distract yourself with something else. On Wednesday, when I was busier with boring meetings and online trainings, I didn't have as much opportunity to backslide so Old Job was a passing thought.

I don't know what happened yesterday (Thursday), but I backslid like a mo-fo. I think because there were 2 rogue emails I was on and I kept waiting for Old Boss to respond. I wanted to know if my answer was appropriate. I wanted to get a guage of where I stood. The Sender was attaching so much urgency to the email - since MERJ is transitioned and My Manager is on vacation, who will be doing this. Like, relax. People can take vacations.  Even if I still had the role and my Manager was in town, ugh doesn't mean we'd meet with you the very next day. Chill.

It turns out one request for a meeting was actually already scheduled by the Sender's direct report a week ago, so not sure what that nonsense was about. I crafted my response over 2 days. Ugh.  But I had to creep Old Boss' calendar to know about the previously scheduled meeting.

And the other one really had no actual urgency at all, I didn't need to be included and it can wait.

I was worried for two things - it would add to whatever annoyance Old Boss was feeling because she had no control over my exit date. Which in the end - DIDN'T MATTER.  And two, somehow I would say the wrong thing - I didn't want my words to belie my true feelings. But then I think, what are my true feelings? I don't even know. I think that's the part of me that still somehow wants this all to be a misunderstanding and I'll be asked back with a brand spanking new role and salary. This is why it helps to talk these things through even if only via a blog.

But yeah, I was creepin Old Boss' Calendar like a fiend. I was checking out some old issue boards to see what was up (I just deleted that bookmark). And then this morning, while deleting more bookmarks, I discovered I still have access to the group's OneNote. Gold! I can't give that up just yet, maybe in a month when I've had my fill. A bit self-destructive, but I mean when am I not.

I have a meeting with a pseudo-mentor next Friday and I know she's going to ask me about the job. I need to get my story straight.

I'm realizing how it might sound to say - oh, well I thought my job was in jeopardy so I asked for more money and when she said no, I bolted.

I imagine that's how she's going to see it because the last time we talked I was panicked about job security.

But in my mind, it was actually a culmination of things:

- Fuzzy expectations

- My programs ending

- no clear vision for my role

- but still being asked to take on these heavy projects that I was outperforming others on

- didn't want to feel like I had to fight for my job (and not get paid for it)

- picking up My Buddy's work

- outperforming

- chaotic department

- never really knowing where I stand performance or salary wise (compared to team mates)

- did I mention chaos

- unclear about remote work

- I just had no faith that this was going to end in my favor and every little hiccup increased my desire for FIRE

I think now I probably see it from Big Boss's point of view, if she was truly consulted. Why would we pay her more for less responsibility. And that's fine. I can acknowledge that if I only did the job I was hired to do, my salary was just fine. If I stayed in my lane, I had the cushy job of my dreams. But I didn't and I couldn't.

I was being asked to do more and more or things were ending up on my plate. I think the perception of me having more bandwidth because My Buddy didn't manage her time properly has been a constant source of frustration. I try to keep my eyes off others but it's hard when I'm getting their overflow. I do think I disproportionately focus on My Buddy, she's not so much the source of my frustration as much as effigy of all of it.

Actually, I may be magnifying this issue in my head.  I forgot Pseudo Mentor already knows I was looking for a job. So my new job wont' be quite as alarming to her.  Phew, I forgot about that. As for the Med Info role she was pushing me towards, I'll just say this was remote and an opportunity to learn something new (but only if she asks). I was getting weird vibes from the Med Info folks anyway.

At the end of the day for me, I perform at a high level and it takes a lot of hours to get things done in this department because the basic structure is still fluid. So I want to be appropriately compensated.

What I feel good about

- that taste of I actually don't want to come back

- the lessened intensity of all "my ideas" for Call Center #3

- Still logging off for lunch and logging off at 3p

- Not turning on iPad because the Devil is lying to me that Old Boss is sending me all these congenial texts and the chilly sendoff was all a figment of my imagination

- Didn't cry today, yesterday, or day before

- still keeping good pace on training with New Job

- so far not intimidated by anyone

Still needs work

- Still creeping

- Still wondering a bit what they're up to

- Still hoping for some sort of mea culpa of my exit and them wanting me back (it's basic human desire)

Still feel weird about

- No one from old team checking on me to see how first week went

- 3 people I worked with regularly still never said congratulations (2 on my immediate team)

- team never said congratulations

- still wish i knew what was being circulated about me and what the reactions were

- the world just goes on without you (I've been here before)

- apparently on new team, demoralizing and demeaning remarks are part of the gig.. yikes...

8a, New Job, Day 4

 Hello!

Another seemingly cool morning here in the south in August.

I should walk, but I'm not going to.

I tried to do an air splits last night, and I'm sorry to say my legs don't stretch very far anymore. I am actually a tightly wound individual that spends her days hunched over her laptop.

I woke up in a fit today around 3 or 4a. I had this dream that I was walking with a child... sometimes I thought it was one of my twin cousins but when I woke up I wasn't sure. Because it was clearly a child and my twin cousins are now in their 20s. I was holding their hand and at one point when we were cowering, I felt like I they were small enough for me to cradle them.

Anyway, in the dream, for whatever reason we were walking after dark, like really late to pick up something from, I guess, some sort of market.  And as we kept turning dark corner after dark corner, I was trying to figure out why we couldn't wait till morning but I never got a response.

Then we turned down one road and some ruffians told us not to come down that way because there would be a gun fight. Then we "heard" (really like sensed) like gunfire and people getting into it behind us. I remember a car next to a curb because we thought about hiding there.  But I just remember feeling like there was no where to turn. There was like a "war zone" ahead and behind us and around us.

So finally, I randomly hid next to a red brick building in an alley and cradled this boy child. But really we were out in the open because these "gang members" would run by us. But somehow they were only focused on shooting each other and not us. But we were definitely still at risk of any stray gunfire.  I didn't hear sound really in the dream but I just knew people were shooting each other.

As always it felt very real. I felt scared.

I'm trying to think of why I even dreamt something like that. My aunt had casually mentioned the storming on The Capitol last night but we didn't spend much time talking about it.  I haven't watched any true crime shows in the last week or so.  It's been like Love Island and stuff on TLC the last couple of days.

I don't know; it was quite odd.

What's been going well

- Plenty of opportunities yesterday to verbally dive into negative memories of old Job but didn't take the bait

- waited 2 days to respond nicely to email regarding old job (still pending)

- noticed the level of anxiety in a few emails regarding old job from old external teammates (it's weird) and did not feed into it

- was able to have a nice moment with New Boss because I remembered a little about a drug class she's taking

- took a lunch yesterday

- gathered trash, will prob take to dump tomorrow

- hanging in there!

- didn't turn on ipad

- didn't have many more broken record conversations playing in my head about Old Job (pretty big win)

- logged off at 3p

Working on it

- Still checked email multiple times after 5p (really waiting on Old Boss response for guidance)

- checked email at 8a today

- checked email waiting on response from Old Boss to know how to proceed

- ruminated way too long at an opportunity I saw as a missed opportunity to contribute to a (meaningless) conversation

What's making me anxious

- weird jabs from Old Roommate

- Old roommate sent email to my New Boss expressing interest

- Old Roommate sent email to my New Boss expressing interest using the same email template I used (whoops!)

- afraid New Boss might ask me if I know Old Roommate and I'm not sure what to say

- unsure about response to emails about Old Job

- unnecessary urgency in the couple emails about Old Job

In money news, my aunt invited me to hang with her at a conference at end of Sept. in Florida. I got a little excited and thought about going. But with COVID and the possibility of airport travel, I eventually nixed the idea. She mentioned my new locale is quite inconvenient after I mentioned not living near any major airports anymore and since I'm sensitive to jabs these days I thought about it. Meh, I think when I thought about traveling when I lived here, I remembered my life for what it was. In the previous five years, I'd visited no friends. One year, I'd taken a few international trips in a concentrated amount of time. And even living near an international airport, I still ended up driving to DC for one of my trips and that was quite inconvenient. I don't remember my family being particularly helpful. Although they did let me stay overnight.

So yeah, people can knock my life choices, but some of my big choices were carefully chosen. I live near a regional airport that is one flight away from the next biggest airport. Given my infrequent air travel, that is worth the trade for my reduced housing cost (~$900/mon).

And I don't know if I mentioned it yesterday, but this same aunt was giving me grief when I mentioned that early retirement is totally for me because of work politics, for one. She seemed almost offended, like what would you even do if you retired. To me the question was so ridiculous, I was both caught off guard and defensive. Like - what? Because  I have nothing to do- I should work?? This is what I mean sometimes when you get bad advice. You hear me complain about work and think that if I made enough money to not work, I would subject myself to that?

That's just illogical. You can't reason with silly people.

While I haven't heard those specific words, I've gotten a pretty similar response from millennials that I've introduced FIRE to. There's just such opposition to it that it's unfathomable to me. Once I learned FIRE was a possibility, I didn't question it was the right thing for me. The only thing I doubted was whether it was possible for me based on my salary. This is why I'm so grateful when other bloggers share their salary and their expenses and savings. It has literally been life altering.

The only thing left to figure out is what I'll do after. Somehow I'm not too worried. As long as I have enough money, I don't see going back to work being at the top of the list of things to do.

Anyway, enough about that. My workday is about to start!

12n, New Job, Day 3

I'm halfway through Day 3. I'm breaking for lunch.

Things going well so far:

- 3rd day in a row breaking for lunch (well day 1 was a bit of an afterthought but I'll count it)

- Not trying to finish all my online modules at break neck speed

- keeping a positive attitude

- getting half-dressed in the morning

- so glad i got hair done last week

- let contractor in to do estimate on leak

- met 2 colleagues

- held my tongue when New boss said she received a nasty gram from one of her other new hires' manager for not coordinating time sheets; my old Boss was also saying she wanted to have some communication with New Boss, but I decided to forget that.. no use for it now

- it's cool outside so I might take a walk, but it's humid so my hair might be a mess

- when asked about old boss's response to my warm fuzzy email by my aunt, i did not launch into a tirade about Old Job

Pending things

- still not sure the scope of my responsibility

- what have i gotten into

- still mentally purging old team and all its accoutrements ( a couple triggering old emails)

- was still ruminating on this thought in between sleeps last night: in 6 months you'll either create the senior manager role for me and ask me back or you'll realize you're better off without me. either way it's a win-win. I learn a new skill and you realign your business (this is the list of many responses I wish i'd said to Old Boss after the chilly exit)

- anticipation of the sinking feeling I will feel when Old Buddy gets promoted in the next 6 months (to keep up with the joneses)

- the realization that this last year did not mean as much to my Old Boss as it did to me (eventually I will be okay with it, in many ways she saved my life... i was a very sad girl prior to meeting her and for the first few months she was this ray of light who just thought i was amazing! or at least she said it and I believed her...at first)

- casually mentioned performance review to New Boss and she was like meh, I'm going to assume you were better than sliced bread (womp, womp, there goes 7 months of over achieving down the drain)
