Scrapbook | Jul 2018 - Summer So Far

Welcome back to My Early Retirement Journey. I'm glad you're here! I appear to be on some sort of overshare binge. This is why all this back pain scares me. It seems like that's how most addiction starts. You have some sort of a pain, and your prescribed narcotic turns into a life of regret.  Anyway, I digress. I'm not super active on social media as I am 1.5 years without a smartphone and counting...

But I what I enjoy about blogging is reading other people's stories and getting to know the nitty gritty details of their lives, not just 1,000 ways to clean your sofa for 3 cents. I like stories. So here's a snapshot of my life this past month with some nifty captions. Enjoy! If you like it,

My Early Retirement Journey - soda graveyard
The strawberry soda grave yard. I like the idea of soda, but after a few delicious cold refreshing sips, I lose interest and I get bloated. I pretend to save them to drink later, but by the time I want another one, the last can has gone flat. I even tried smaller cans...

My Early Retirement Journey - moscato spritzer
I submitted a feature for Scotch Street. Posting pending. Drank a few sips of this moscato spritzer as well. Didn't taste as good as I remembered.

My Early Retirement Journey - firetrucks

apartment fire

My Early Retirement Journey - fire truck
There was a fire in my apartment building. Hallway now smells like roasted carpet. What would you save in a house fire?

frugal - hot dog rice
Nutritious, well-balanced meals have fallen low on the priority scale for this single 30-something. This slim meal of hot dog and rice made an appearance more than once this July.  Maybe there will be a revival of healthier meals this fall. Stay tuned...

bed frame

floor mattress
Lastly, I'm in the market for a new mattress (possible a new life). After a searing night of back pain, I came home one day and dragged my mattress to the floor and took the wooden slats off my bedframe to force myself to get a better mattress with traditional support. Coming soon...

So, how was your summer been so far?! Any slice of life images to share?

Notes on Life | Aug 3, 2018: Floor Mattress, Blogging Nook, Writer's Retreat

Welcome back to My Early Retirement Journey. In case you're just joining us, here's a little bit about me.  I am a single 30-something, openly Christian, hesitantly immigrant-y, human woman. I love watching TV while eating takeout, and I want to retire early. I currently work as a consultant in a tele-health call center making around $40/hr. I started my professional life in 2015 at the ripe ole age of 31 after a few false starts. I spent 2016 paying off about $10,000 worth of credit card debt. I spent 2017 paying off about $20,000 in private student loans; I still have about $300,000 in federal student loans for which I am currently on an income-based repayment plan for the next 25 years, give or take.  I started really getting into savings and investing late 2017 when I stumbled upon the FIRE (financial independence, retire early) community.  In 2018, I made the decision to try to save for a sabbatical and maybe if all goes well continue the journey to early retirement.  Along this journey, I give weekly more personal than finance updates just like this one. Come along with me, I urge you!
Monday – Weekend was kind of good. Still sleeping with mattress on the floor. Finally went into a mattress store to try to figure out what mattress to get. It helped… a little. Something between firm and not so firm. Blah, not that useful, but at least I tried. Decided just to compare 3 affordable options from each of the 2 bigger online stores. Not sure what else to do.

Aunty MERJ got her car back from the Repo Man. Eye still twitching. Gotta do some back-to-school shopping for my life, in general.

Tuesday –  Creepy crawly bug crawling on the bed in the middle of the night. Haven’t been sleeping through the night for at least a week now. Next week, I’m working late shift so I’ll try staying up later and see if that helps. Maybe till after midnight. Created a little blogging nook this morning before work and I’m super pumped to go home and use it. Had relegated myself to tinkering with blog to just 2 (or 3) times a week, but I’m thinking about the blog all the time and just writing notes on every scrap of paper I can find. That’s dizzying. Proud of myself for using what I already had instead of getting a new laptop (or horror: using my work’s laptop at home).

The bug did make me want to book my hotel holiday this weekend. Number one reason why I haven’t taken a bigger vacation going on 3 years now… the ones I look at cost about $2,000.  That’s about 1 paycheck and about a month of essential expenses. So it would take a whole month to SAVE that much. I haven’t found a vacation that would bring me a month’s worth of pleasure to make it worth it.

Think I finally came up with a title for my next life-project: Take Back My Life 2020. More on that later.

Wednesday – Went to sleep a little bit later last night. After 1a. I slept through the night I guess. Lower back does not hurt as much. Ergonomics evaluator at work helped adjust my chair. It actually helped. Tip: Your bottom is supposed to hang over the back of your chair so that your tailbone is not compressed all day long. That was my chief complaint. Who knew! Got salmon and rice for lunch. But didn’t eat it. Clogged up again. Maybe when I get home.

Stayed up trying to do some back-to-school shopping. After about a week of deliberation and being too tired for clicking around, settled on a firmer mattress ($600) that one review says is recommended for side and back sleepers, and in another said not the best for side sleepers. I don’t know. I got tired of figuring it out. Ended up going with the supplier that sets it up and takes the old one away to prevent further clicking or phoning around.

Clicked around so more to pay Aunty MERJ’s car note, electric bill, fiddle with her car insurance, and cell phone bill. Some of this stuff I still have to do manually because I can’t figure out how to access these accounts automatically without her help and she’s on her own timetable.

Thursday – Didn’t sleep well last night. Up from 2a to 6a. Watched Cybil. Composed mental emails to my family that I will likely not send. I guess look for that in a future post. Called Aunty MERJ. She was able to get to store to get some grocery items. Someone in her building charged her $40 for the ride. It’s less than 2 miles down the road. Can you imagine! Made a call to Meals on Wheels for her. They were able to get her restarted for meals tomorrow! Tried to fax some forms to doctor’s office for one of the assistance programs. Of course they didn’t receive it or any other visit notes from previous doctor’s offices from when she was in Maryland. 5 more phone calls, all three of my breaks, and 7 more pages of forms to fill out. Anyone else want to sign up and help!

Had fries for lunch. Haven’t had any nutritious food all week.  Appetite loss with so many things on my mind. Back and shoulder still hurt. Glad savings is at set-it-and-forget-it from beginning of year because been spending without a care.

Friday – Wow. Did I make it?! It appears I did. 3.5 hours left of work. Hallelujah!! Frustration tears today. Wonky Friday, as usual. I think I spent every lunch and break this week doing something or Aunty MERJ. Called doctor's office, new person I spoke with did get a least the emergency room visit back in June or July when it was requested. Ugh, that was a waste of my break yesterday. Thanks, humans.

 In other news all my late night shenanigans led to me finally pulling the trigger on a weekend “away.” I’m driving maybe 15 to 20 miles up the road just to try to get a good night’s sleep. I’m calling it a writer’s retreat and that totally turned the whole thing around. I got excited once I re-branded it. About $240 total for the 2 nights. Goals of the weekend away: blog tasks and life tasks and a good night’s sleep. Bonus: maybe some nice cable shows!  Enjoy your weekend! Any plans?

TV this week: Cybil, Big Brother, too zombied out for much more
Takeout this week: Everyday (Wendy's with a coupon, Japanese)

Throwback 20s: How I Traveled to Oxford, England for Free

So every now and then when I binge read other FIRE blogs, I wonder what the heck I was doing in my 20s when they were all seemingly frugaling away their coppers.  To keep my head up and not get too bogged down with what I wasn't doing, I decided to start this series as a gentle reminder of the adventure portfolio I was building with a FIRE twist.  So instead of bemoaning my twenties, I want to take some time to celebrate that part of The Journey! Come along! I urge you!

THE HACK:
ASA Oxford 2009 (Now Summerfuel)
Plan to arrive in Oxford between 9:30am - 2 pm on your arrival day, Thursday June 25th for RAs

HOW I FOUND ABOUT IT: A friend I met at a US academic summer camp we both worked in 2005

THE DETAILS:
A Resident Advisor (RA) will live on each hall to create a community, provide support, plan activities and help students get the most out of their stay in Oxford.

INCLUDED EXCURSIONS:
Best of London, Part I
Best of London, Part II
Blenheim Palace
Broughton Castle

SALARY:
$800 - $1,600 (depending on length of program)
Up to $250 travel stipend
Full room and board*
*they gave us cash for lunches, so I just hoarded it and applied it to excursions/flight

THE UGLY TRUTH: (I don't want to be the socialmedialite who glosses over the bumps)
I got swine flu there and was bed-laden for 1 week before I left. However, I got free medicine. I planned  to stay a week after the gig ended but my host refused me after I got sick. I also hated everyone I worked with that summer. The kids were fine though. Getting sick on travels has kind of dampened my vigor for travel in early retirement; that and I've been to the hotspots by now!

MEMORY STOCK:

Passed Over for a Promotion

So, here's what happened the other day at work. Background first. Every time need has arisen that I can fill, I have volunteered to do it. I am the only person on my team that has trained on all the products we service. ALL OF THEM. I've worked on three teams now and I'm the only one that has done so on the whole team. When service levels are low, they switch people around to provide coverage. I have been willing and eager. I kept thinking at some point it would be reflected in my compensation with a raise or a promotion. It's been 2.5 years and nothing. When I was offered a champ role, a pseudo-leadership role, I asked around and was told it didn't come with a bump in pay, so I declined it (later discovered this wasn't completely true). I already felt I was being asked to do more without commensurate compensation.

What I didn't think of then was I could have asked for a promotion and or raise. So young professionals out there, remember to ask! Companies apparently don't just offer you more money because YOU think you deserve it. I believe at least one of my co-workers did this because when she became champ, she was promoted to Senior and that comes with a raise. Because that wasn't the norm, I just didn't think to do it. Also, I've been trying to live a life more ordinary and just learning to adjust instead of trying to steer. It results in less heartache in the end and 80% of the time, it works just fine. This would be on time when maybe it didn't?

Read more: here and here.

Anyways, for the sake of the overshare, here's what I emailed my manager:
I am interested in the role of Senior Widgetmaker. In the event that my contributions to the team in service to the client are fragmented due to management turnover, a few are highlighted below. I copied Martin since he’s been my manager most recently for a longer stretch of time and can vouch for some of the events listed.
Some notable contributions:
*   Seamless and (quick) transition across pods and managers
*   Training on all products, including AMD (one of our products)
*   Covering all lines during periods of high volume and need
*   Weekend coverage until vacancy was filled
*   Holiday coverage
*   Pager coverage during holidays when team members asked to switch
*   Pinch hitting when supplemental evening coverage needed
*   Assistance with product recall
*   Disaster coverage for replacements during hurricane season
*   Excellent customer feedback
*   Great client feedback
*   Social committee
*   Training new team members for night and weekends (even receiving a Badge in the Performance Management System)

Please let me know if there are additional responsibilities I can take on or contributions I can make to the team or in service to the client to be considered for Senior Widgetmaker."

Her reply:
Thanks for sending below and communicating your interest in wanting to be Senior Widgetmaker. I am keeping Martin attached to this conversation, because he will doing 1:1s with you while I am out on maternity leave, and will be fully engaged in your development plan.

Please review attached job description for a Senior role from HR, as that is the first and last step with the role to be finalized. Please send me your CV as well, so I can review it...

My Early Retirement Journey - passed over for a promotion

Me: Really!

We literally all do the same job and people get promoted for reasons unknown.
A couple weeks later, this appeared in my inbox:

Senior Widgetmaker Promotions:
-Grant: He has been an integral part of our CV pod serving in a leadership role as a product champ, assisting the client with launch of Live Connect, training/mentoring staff, and traveling to assist our team in Mexico City.  His dedication to the team and relationship with the client...
-Christine: She quickly showcased her exceptional customer service skills and positive attitude which she continues to bring each day. Christine has been recognized on multiple occasions by the client and her calls played during client meetings. She serves as a training liaison for the CV team, is cross-trained on many products, mentors staff, and has traveled to both Mexico City and Wilmington to assist the team...
-Karina has been an integral part of the team since the initiation of the project. This year Karina has taken on the role of additional champ responsibilities which has allowed her the opportunity to work closely with different team members.  Currently, Karina serves the team as being a product champion for 3 complex products. In her role as Champ and as a member of this team since launch, Karina frequently provides suggestions on program resources or processes and is ready to provide resolutions to any issues that may arise. Karina has built strong relationships with the client over the years. She has earned their trust and they value her opinion on daily operations...
-Monica:  was one of the first product champs.  Traveling to the Widget Making Factory to learn her new role, Monica returned to RTP, sharing her expertise and best practices with the team.  Shortly thereafter, Monica helped to develop and deliver the first advanced MIR training.  More recently, Monica transitioned champ roles and quickly came up to speed to support another product.  In both of her champ roles, Monica has developed and maintained strong client relationships, and she quickly impressed the client with her knowledge and proficiency.  Monica is also a mentor and resource ...
